The Tropico Soundtrack Story

The story behind the Tropico soundtracks is that Daniel Indart provided a collection of authentic Latin-styled music tracks that were licensed for the original video game. This unique approach was highly successful and became a defining, award-winning feature of the game series.

  • Licensed Music Approach: Rather than composing a traditional orchestral score specifically for the game, the developers (PopTop Software) licensed a library of existing, authentic Latin Caribbean music tracks largely performed by Daniel Indart and other artists from his record label, LMS Records.

  • Defining Feature: The cheerful, ambient Latin music became one of the main, and most praised, elements of the game's success, creating an immersive "banana republic" atmosphere that perfectly matched the game's tongue-in-cheek tone.

  • Awards and Recognition: The original Tropico soundtrack won the "Outstanding Achievement in Original Musical Composition" award at the 5th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, a rare feat for a soundtrack that largely consisted of licensed music rather than a custom score.

  • Commercial Albums: The tracks used in the game were part of commercial albums released by The Daniel Indart Project, such as Tropico: The Music, Tropico: Paradise Island, and Tropico 2 - Pirate Cove.

Tropico: Paradise Island                Tropico 2: Pirate Cove

  • Lasting Influence: The style established by Daniel Indart in the first game was so popular that subsequent games in the Tropico series continued the tradition of using licensed, authentic Latin music.

Music from the Tropico soundtracks, produced and performed by Daniel Indart, has been widely featured in other major films and television series, thanks to Indart's extensive music licensing business.

REVIEWS

Tarzana, California—May 8, 2001—Tropico’s 3D graphics and multi-layered challenges are bound to win new players and add to the popularity of simulation games, but so will Tropico’s music  Check out what some of the top critics are already saying:

“If you don’t start dancing while playing Tropico, one must seriously have no beat.  PopTop Software has aligned a beautifully assembled score of “Caribbean Folk.”  It matches the aura Tropico emits and really brings the island to life without any repetition.  PopTop Software has deftly captured the emotion surrounding Tropico and installed it into a great soundtrack.”  Kevin “Exodus” Weinberg of www.pcparadox.com

“The music deserves a separate paragraph.  As I progressed through the game, I found myself nodding along with the rhythm, without even noticing it!  Kudos to Daniel Indart, the person responsible for the game’s soundtrack, for such an amazing job”  GAME ADDICTS MAGAZINE www.gameaddicts.net

The game takes its music cues from 14 original Latin songs produced and directed by renowned producer/songwriter, Daniel Indart.  The lively offering of Caribbean rhythms and flavors incorporates beautiful melodies, dance beats and spicy lyrics and features leading Latin artists/songwriters, including Daniel Indart himself.  The production exhibits a highly sophisticated, pristine quality, while preserving its fresh, Caribbean street like feel.
